Om arrangementet

Awareness of the environmental problems stemming from plastic pollution has increased lately. Plastics have been found in seabirds, whales and dolphins, and more recently we are discovering it in commercial fish species including Norwegian cod. There are ongoing debates about cosmetics, artificial grass, plastic bag fees and the wear and tear of car tires, but knowledge about the sources and effects of plastic pollution and microplastics are limited.

The Norwegian Institute for Water Research has several on-going projects in which plastic pollution is investigated, and NIVA researchers will in this seminar discuss some of the topic’s crucial themes:

  • The history of plastic: past, present and future

  • Macro-, micro- and nanoplastics: what’s the difference?

  • The science behind the media: what do we know vs what do we need to know?
  • Where does it come from, what is its distribution and what impact does it have?
  • How are we affected? Can I die from plastic?
  • What does the future look like?
